DRIVING ON A ROUNDABOUT

---

DRIVING ON A ROUNDABOUT
(synonym: Traffic Circle)

Driving elements (procedure)

Note early if this is a single-lane or multi-lane roundabout.

Approaching a multi-lane roundabout:

·       if you go to an exit from a roundabout that is substantially straight ahead – use any lane (unless arrows indicate otherwise);

·       if you go to an exit on the left – change to the leftmost lane;

·       if you go to an exit on the right – change to the rightmost lane.

Turn signal:

·       if you go to an exit from a roundabout that is substantially straight ahead – no turn signal;

·       if you go to the first exit on the left – switch on left turn signal 3 seconds or 1 light pole span before entering the roundabout, and keep it on until just after leaving the roundabout;

·       in all other cases – switch on right turn signal 3 seconds or 1 light pole span before entering the roundabout, and in a more than 4-exit roundabout or in a multi-lane roundabout also change right turn signal to left when passing the last entrance preceding your exit.

Start slowing down:

·       If there is a “Roundabout Ahead” sign - at this sign;

·       If a solid dividing line begins near the roundabout - at the beginning of the solid dividing line;

·       If there is none of the above - 2 seconds or about half light pole span before the roundabout.

Approaching a single-lane roundabout:

Bring the right side of your car close to the centre of the road.

Slowing further at the entrance into the roundabout (at the broken hold line), direct the front of your car about 30 degrees to the left.

At a 3-exit T-shape roundabout:

Give way to vehicles on your right that are going straight ahead.

            Give way to vehicles already in the roundabout that are signalling right turn.

At a 3-exit Y-shape roundabout:

Give way to vehicles on the first road on your right that are turning right.

            Give way to vehicles already in the roundabout that are signalling right turn.

At a 4-exit roundabout:

Look ahead for oncoming vehicles turning right. If there are any: stop completely at the hold line, and give them way.

Look right – give way to vehicles on your right going ahead (no turn signal) or turning right.

With oncoming vehicles going straight ahead proceed through the roundabout simultaneously.

At a more than 4-exit roundabout:

Look right only – give way to vehicles on your right going ahead (no turn signal) or turning right.

Stop only if you have to give way: look ahead, creep to the hold line, and completely stop as soon as the hold line has disappeared under the hood (i.e. within 1 meter);

if you do not have to give way, do not stop.

On a single-lane roundabout move bearing to the central island.

On a multi-lane roundabout do not change lanes, and exit it in the same lane as you enter.

Lightly press the lower third of the accelerator pedal, and accelerate to the allowed speed.
