Make sure there is no “No Right Turn” or “Left Turn Only” sign.
Change
to the rightmost lane well before the turn:
Switch on the right turn signal.
Look: in the centre mirror – in the
right side mirror – over the right shoulder out the side window (blind spot)
for cars approaching from behind in the target lane.
When clear:
Look ahead. Change to the rightmost
lane.
If yet far from the turn, switch off the turn signal.
Switch
on the right turn signal 3 seconds or 1 light pole span before the turn.
Slow
down approaching the turn.
Check
for a bus or long truck in a left-hand lane, indicating right turn (long
vehicles may turn right even from the leftmost lane), and if there is one:
stop in your lane at the rear end
of the long vehicle, and wait until it completes the turn.
Approach the right turn with the right side of your
car just left of the middle of the road.
At
the “Stop” sign or line stop completely as soon as the line disappears
under the hood (i.e. within 1 meter), and wait for 3 seconds even if there is
no one.
At
the “Give Way” sign or line slow down, stopping within 1 metre of the line
only if there are pedestrians or vehicles on the crossing road.
On
the terminating road of a T-intersection slow down stopping at the road
junction only if there are pedestrians or vehicles on the crossing road.
If
traffic on the road where you are turning is jammed, wait at the road
junction not entering the intersection until there is room for your car.
Perceive
the “entering point” in the lane past the centre of the crossing road where
you are turning.
Give way to any vehicle, except an oncoming vehicle turning right or turning
left in a slip lane. Turning right at a T-intersection, in a 60 km/h zone you will need a gap of at least four seconds (i.e. about 70 meters or 1.5 light pole span) between your car and vehicles approaching from the right, and six seconds from the left (i.e. about 100 meters or 2 light pole spans). Turning right at a cross intersection, in a 60 km/h zone you will need a gap of at least four seconds (i.e. about 70 meters or 1.5 light pole span) to the right, six seconds (i.e. about 100 meters or 2 light pole spans) to the left, and four seconds (i.e. about 70 meters or 1.5 light pole span) to the front where there is oncoming traffic.
With
an oncoming vehicle turning right you make simultaneous turn left side to left
side.
Before
entering the crossing road, give way to pedestrians on the road you are
turning into.
While
waiting, keep your wheels straight (do not steer right).
Crash avoidance check sequence:
Approaching the intersection, first look
ahead for oncoming vehicles going straight or turning left.
If there is any: crawl to the hold line (at a T-intersection to the road
junction) and stop completely.
Then look
left for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the left.
If there is any: look ahead, crawl to the hold line (at a T-intersection to
the road junction) and stop completely.
Having reached the road
junction, look right for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the
right.
If there is any – stop completely, wait until the crossing road on the right
is clear, and repeat the ahead-left-right check sequence, i.e. again look
ahead for oncoming vehicles going straight or left, then look for vehicles approaching on the crossing
road from the left, and from the right.
When clear:
Start
crossing the road with your wheels straight (do not steer right yet).
Looking left for approaching
vehicles, slowly move till the middle of the road.
If a vehicle comes from the
left, slam on the brakes and wait for the vehicle to pass.
When
clear:
Looking
at the “entering point”, make a square turn past the middle of the crossing
road - start steering right when the front of your car comes close to the centre
of the intersection (right turn is “far and square”).
Enter
the crossing road immediately past its centre, into its rightmost lane.
However, if you are turning into the continuing road of a T-intersection AND only one lane is allowed right turn, you may go into any
lane (e.g. into the leftmost lane).
After
turning, the steering wheel will spin back to the straight position by itself
(“self centre”) - do not give it a free hand, maintain light grip and
straighten as needed.
Exiting
the turn, lightly press the lower third of the accelerator pedal, and
accelerate to the allowed speed.
