DRIVING STRAIGHT AHEAD THROUGH AN INTERSECTION ON A MINOR ROAD

Crash avoidance check sequence (left-right-left):

Approaching the intersection, look left for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the left.
If there is any: look ahead, creep to the hold line (at a T-intersection to the road junction) and stop completely.

Having approached the road junction, look right for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the right.
If there is any – stop completely, make sure the crossing road on the right is clear, and repeat the left-right-left check sequence, i.e. again look left for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the left, and then look right for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the right.

Cars coming from your left on the far half of the road impose a deferred threat, and you check for it twice: beforehand, while approaching the intersection, and later as you start crossing the road.

Immediate crash threat comes from the right, that’s why you make sure the right-hand part of the crossing road is clear immediately before entering the intersection.

These considerations cast into the left-right-left check sequence.

If you have braked to give way to a crossing car, remember to repeat the left-right-left check sequence in full to rule out any possibility of collision.

When clear:

Looking to the left for approaching cars, slowly move till the middle of the road.

If a crossing car comes from the left, slam on the brakes and wait for the car to pass.

In this situation you will stop in the middle of the crossing road – this is normal behaviour.

You start crossing the road looking to the left for cars on the far half of the road in a typical “straight” intersection with wide view in both directions.

However, if view on the right is more narrowed than on the left, for example, due to a hill crest, road curve, or a truck parked close to the intersection, etc, you reverse the check sequence: having made sure that the left-hand part of the crossing road is clear immediately before entering the intersection, you creep into the crossing looking to the right, in the direction of the narrowed view and potential danger.

Crossing a road with heavy traffic, where there is a median strip wide enough to cover the length of your car, cross the road in two steps: first, select a safe gap to the right and move to the middle of the road protected by the median strip; wait there until you see a safe gap from the left, and complete the crossing.

Look ahead.

Lightly press the lower third of the accelerator pedal, and accelerate to the allowed speed.

Easy acceleration is good for the engine, and helps avoid burnouts.

Remember: spin wheels and you risk to fail the driving test due to insufficient control of the car.

Maintain a steady course.

Keep the car steadily in the line of traffic; if you let it wander, you may fail the driving test.
