At
the “Stop” sign or line stop completely as soon as the line has disappeared
under the hood (i.e. within 1 meter), and wait for 3 seconds even if there is
no one.
At
the “Give Way” sign or line slow down, stopping within 1 metre of the line
only if there are pedestrians or vehicles on the crossing road.
On
the terminating road of a T-intersection slow down stopping at the road
junction only if there are pedestrians or vehicles on the crossing road.
Check
for a bus or long truck in an adjacent lane that is signalling turn in the direction of your lane, and if there is one:
stop
in your lane at the rear end of the long vehicle, and wait until it completes
the turn.
If
traffic in your lane across the intersection is jammed, wait at the road
junction not entering the intersection until there is room across for your
car.
Give way to pedestrians and vehicles crossing from the right (including those
turning right) and from the left (including those turning left).
Needn’t
give way to an oncoming car turning right, unless it is on a major road.
Crash avoidance check sequence (left-right-left):
Approaching the intersection, look
left for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the left.
If there is any: look ahead, creep to the hold line (at a T-intersection to
the road junction) and stop completely.
Having approached the road
junction, look right for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the
right.
If there is any – stop completely, make sure the crossing road on the right
is clear, and repeat the left-right-left check sequence, i.e. again look left
for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the left, and then look
right for vehicles approaching on the crossing road from the right.
When clear:
Looking to the left for approaching
cars, slowly move till the middle of the road.
If a crossing car comes from the
left, slam on the brakes and wait for the car to pass.
Look
ahead.
Lightly
press the lower third of the accelerator pedal, and accelerate to the allowed
speed.
Maintain
a steady course.
