SPEED

9.       passing a stationary or stopping vehicle with emergency flashers on, a broken-down vehicle or crash scene (unless on a freeway or motorway).

Slow down to 40 km/h. Though ARR does not mention this, this is stated in Ref.#8 p.43, and is dictated by common sense.

Behaviour of a driver in a breakdown may be unpredictable, e.g. he may change lanes without giving way or fling the door open and jump out in front of your car.

10.   Also be prepared to slow down after a warning sign.

Warning signs have distinguishing diamond shape and yellow background.

Whenever you see it, be ready to slow down to accommodate to the hazard.

Be brake-ready when:

1.       driving in the leftmost lane or driveway you see at the kerb a pedestrian, especially a kid, cyclist, skateboarder or drunk;

2.       passing a stopped ice-cream van;

3.       driving past a stopped bus or tram.

Brake-ready driving means driving with you foot covering the brake pedal, ready to slam on the brakes.

You drive brake-ready whenever you see someone who may not be able to judge your speed and could step into the road in front of you, e.g. kids, elderly, people with disabilities or drunk.

Kill your speed whenever you approach a pedestrian, rather than allowing the pedestrian kill your future.

Whenever you have to drive brake-ready, consider flashing high beam once to warn others of your presence, and also be horn-ready, i.e. place a palm on the horn ready to sound.
