Default speed limit

In a built-up area – 50 km/h everywhere except the Northern Territory;

in the Northern Territory – 60 km/h.

Outside built-up areas – 100 km/h everywhere except Western Australia and the Northern Territory;

in Western Australia - 110 km/h;

in the Northern Territory - no speed limit.

 

Keep your speed within 5 km/h below the signposted or default speed limit; driving slower than 20 km/h below the signposted or default speed limit is an offence, unless in adverse conditions.

 

Check speedometer having left a motorway or freeway, and every time you meet a “Speed Limit” sign, a “Speed Camera” sign or go downhill.

 

School zone

Speed limit everywhere except South Australia is 40 km/h

between 8:00-09:30 AM and 2:30-4:00 PM on schooldays;

in South Australia – 25 km/h 24 hours 7 days a week.

 

The school zone ends where you pass either an “End School Zone” sign or another “Speed Limit” sign.

 

Passing a bus, displaying 40 km/h “Speed Limit” sign, only when its yellow lights are flashing (at any time of the day): speed limit is 40 km/h within 50 metres (1.5 light pole spans) before and after the bus.

 

Roadwork (synonym: worksite): Default speed limit is 40 km/h everywhere except South Australia;

in South Australia – 25 km/h.

 

Shared zone: Speed limit is 10 km/h; give way to pedestrians and cyclists unconditionally.

 

Road hump (synonyms: speed hump, speed bump, sleeping policeman) and a hump pedestrian crossing: Speed limit is 25 km/h in a road or 5 km/h in a shared zone.

 

Maintain following distance of 3 seconds, or 1 light pole span.

 

Increase following distance:

1.       if being tailgated or following a tailgater;

2.       following a learner car;

3.       following a vehicle being driven erratically;

4.       following a truck or bus;

5.       when you are tired or sleepy;

6.       in poor visibility (night time, fog, the sun in your eyes, heavy rain etc.);

7.       on a wet road.

 

Slow down:

(Prior to reducing speed, check the centre mirror for a tailgater.)

1.       when you see a “Reduce Speed” sign;

2.       in poor visibility (night time, fog, the sun in your eyes, heavy rain etc.);

3.       on a wet, icy or gravel road;

4.       before slippery patches;

5.       before turns and road bends;

6.       before the crest of a rise in a road, as in any narrowed view;

7.       approaching a pedestrian crossing;

8.       approaching a horse-rider;

9.       passing a stationary or stopping vehicle with emergency flashers on, a broken-down vehicle or crash scene (unless on a freeway or motorway).

10.   Also be prepared to slow down after a warning sign.

 

Be brake-ready when:

1.       driving in the leftmost lane or driveway you see at the kerb a pedestrian, especially a kid, cyclist, skateboarder or drunk;

2.       passing a stopped ice-cream van;

3.       driving past a stopped bus or tram.
