LANE SELECTION

Freeway, motorway and roads with speed limit over 80 km/h

(in Western Australia over 90 km/h)

Use any except the rightmost lane.

Stopping is prohibited on such roads, and there is nothing preventing you from driving in the leftmost lane. For driving straight you should use the 1st lane unless it is congested with traffic, then use the 2nd lane, etc, but leave the rightmost lane of your half of the road free for overtaking.

Take 2nd lane if you see ahead vehicles queued waiting to enter the freeway.

ARR require this for all roads with speed limit over 80 km/h, whether a freeway or not (r.130); in Western Australia - over 90 km/h (Ref.#14 section 3.4.2, p.52).
