LANE SELECTION

Highway with speed limit up to 80 km/h

(in Western Australia up to 90 km/h)

2-lane highway

To drive straight:

if the visible road ahead is clear of parked cars, use the 1st lane; otherwise use the 2nd lane.

If the 1st lane is free of parked cars (e.g. it has a kerb-side yellow line), the 2nd lane should be left for overtaking, and moreover, on a highway the 1st lane is safer to drive in. However, when there are cars parked in the 1st (leftmost) lane, it is safer to drive in the 2nd lane rather than constantly change lanes.
