LANE SELECTION

Explication

Planning your trip is chiefly about keeping a lookout for directional signs and early changing to the correct lane in preparation for a turn – you can change lanes well in advance, as this exempts you from adhering to a specific lane for driving straight ahead.

IN GENERAL

See lanes even in an unmarked road.
Where possible, maintain 1 metre clearance from parked vehicles when passing.

See lanes where the road is wide enough for two lines of traffic but there are no lanes marked on the road (synonym for unmarked lanes is “lines of traffic”):

when you move close to the left side of the road – you are in the leftmost lane (or 1st lane);

when you move close to the centre of the road – you are in the rightmost lane.

Where there are no dividing lines, you should travel as if lines between lanes were marked there, and change lanes in the same safe manner as described in CHANGING LANES section.

“Safety margin” is the clearance between sides of your car and alongside vehicles or stationary objects, recommended safe minimum is 120 cm or approximately 1.5 length of your arm to reduce the danger of sideswiping.
