KERBSIDE STOP

---

KERBSIDE STOP

(synonyms: Parking at the kerb, Pulling over)

Driving elements (procedure)

Switch on the left turn signal 3 seconds or 1 light pole span before pulling over.

If you are not in the leftmost lane yet, change to it:

Look: in the centre mirror – in the left side mirror – over the left shoulder out the side windows (blind spot) for cars approaching from behind in the leftmost lane.

However, if you are changing to the leftmost lane immediately in front of a parked car, you need only to glance over the left shoulder out the side windows (blind spot).

When clear:

Right foot over the brake pedal.

Look ahead. Change to the leftmost lane.

Slow down and slowly pull over to the left kerb at about 20 degrees until you cannot see the kerb under the hood. Continue creeping, and at the moment when you see an imaginary line of the kerb has crossed the left sprinkler on the hood, start steering right.

Brake to slightly above stalling speed. Looking in the left side mirror and slowly steering right creep until the car is parallel and within 40 cm to the kerb (30 cm in Australian Capital Territory and South Australia).

If you are parking behind another car, stop when you can see only where its rear wheels touch the road (within 1-2 m).

Press the brake pedal firmly.

Switch off the turn signal.

Apply the hand brake.

Shift transmission to Park.

Take the right foot off the brake pedal.

Parking uphill, turn the steering wheel fully to the right (away from the nearest kerb); parking downhill, turn the steering wheel fully to the left (towards the nearest kerb).

If you are leaving the car, make sure to close all windows and switch off lights.

Switch off the engine.

If you are leaving the car:

Unbuckle the seat belt.

Ensure you do not hit anyone by opening the door.

Remove the car key and lock the car.
