Essential
driving techniques explained through “how to do” step-by-step instructions by a
group of Australian driving instructors, illustrated with 350 real life photographs.
Audience
The
primary audience are Australian learner drivers; just the same this
publication may be helpful for all those who are learning to drive from
scratch on left-hand drive roads in a car with automatic transmission.
This
publication details practical actions an experienced driver does in typical manoeuvres, paying great attention to Australian specifics. List of driving techniques is limited to the minimal set of
skills needed to pass the driving test.
In other words, every skill exposed here is absolutely indispensable to
survive on the road.
Pre-requisite:
knowledge of road rules.
(Note that
State and Territory road rules override Australian road rules.)
How to read
Description
of each driving manoeuvre consists of two parts, starting with a sequence of
elementary actions an experienced driver does to complete it. Before going to
the road on your own, you should be able to tell this part by heart.
The
second part explains elements of the manoeuvre using photographs, safety
considerations, and references to the Australian road rules.
Driving
techniques are presented in the order recommended for practicing (the most
complex and dangerous manoeuvres go last). These driving procedures should be
practised until your reactions become automatic. After you have practised a
manoeuvre in your car, you simply must reread the related section, and then
keep practising until the procedure becomes your own routine.
On the driving test, test officer expects you to execute each element of the driving procedures specified in this eBook; if you miss any - you lose points. When the driving procedure says, let say, "look over the right shoulder", the test officer will be on the watch for your head movement, when it says "look in the centre mirror" or "look at the instrument panel", the test officer will be on the watch for your eye movement, when it says "the blinker must indicate for at least 5 seconds", the test officer will be counting seconds, etc. That's why you shouldn't book the driving test until you have learnt all driving elements by heart and made them your own routine.
Photographs
illustrate correct driver’s behaviour, unless explicitly state “INCORRECT”.
