MOVING FROM THE KERB
(synonym: Setting the car in motion)

 

Driving elements (procedure)

 

Verify all doors are shut.

Start up position of levers: hand brake is up (applied), transmission is on Park.


Seating position adjusted within comfortable reach of pedals.

Steering wheel tilt adjusted for your hands to rest comfortably on its upper half.

 

Fasten your seat belt. Make sure all passengers have fastened their seat belts.

Feet off pedals.

Start the engine.


Look at the instrument panel:

check the Fuel Gauge to make sure there is enough fuel,

and check warning lights: Hand Brake is the only warning light that must be on.

If Open Door warning light is on, do not continue until you close all the doors.

If any other warning light is on, shut down the engine until the fault is fixed.


Adjust all rear view mirrors.

 

Switch on the right turn signal.

 

Left foot to brace position.

Right foot on the brake.

Press the brake pedal firmly.

Shift transmission to Drive.

 

Release the hand brake.

Look at the instrument panel: make sure that the Hand Brake warning light went off.

 

Hands on the steering wheel at “10 minutes to 2”.

 

Overall, the engine must run idle for at least 30 seconds before you drive off.

Overall, the right turn signal must indicate for at least 5 seconds before you pull out.

 

Look: in the centre mirror – in the right side mirror – over the right shoulder out the side window (blind spot) for anyone approaching from behind.

 

When clear:

Move the right foot from the brake to accelerator pedal.

Creeping forward, steer toward the 2nd lane.

Lightly press the lower third of the accelerator pedal, and drive along the 2nd lane.

Make sure the turn signal has switched off.

Accelerate to the allowed speed.

 

Maintain a steady course to the left of the centre of the road.
