REVERSE PARALLEL PARKING

Driving elements (procedure)

Switch on the left turn signal 3 seconds or 1 light pole span before the parking space.

Look: in the centre mirror – in the left side mirror – over the left shoulder out the side windows (blind spot) to check if clear.

Slow down and line up your car at a distance of an arm (50-100 cm) parallel to the car parked in front of your parking space.

As soon as your and that car side mirrors are level, press the brake pedal firmly.

Shift transmission to Reverse.

Switch off the turn signal.

Look: in the centre mirror – in the right side mirror – over the right shoulder out the side window (blind spot) for cars approaching from behind.

Give way to all.

If you have had to give way, repeat the check sequence “centre mirror – the right side mirror – over the right shoulder out the side window”.

When clear:

The first turning point

Turn around, and look through the rear left door window.

Slowly reverse parallel with the other parked car, until the rear margin of your stand between the left windows is almost level with the other car rear.

Brake to almost full stop.

The second turning point

Turn the steering wheel fully to the left.

Look far ahead for oncoming vehicles.

Glance over the left shoulder out the side windows (blind spot).

Look to the right of the front of your car and over the right shoulder out the side window (blind spot) for any obstructions.

If a vehicle approaches, wait not moving until the driver of that vehicle either bypasses you, or stops and clearly gives you way letting you finish the manoeuvre.

Look through the windscreen and left door windows.

Slowly reverse until the front of your car comes to 45° to the other parked car.

Brake to almost full stop.

The third turning point

Turn the steering wheel 1 full circle to the right.

Look through the left door windows.

Slowly reverse until you see that your left windscreen frame crosses the right rear corner of the other parked car.

Brake to almost full stop.

Finishing

Turn the steering wheel fully to the right.

Glance over the right shoulder out the side window (blind spot).

Look to the left of the front of your car and over the left shoulder out the side windows (blind spot).
