CAR CONTROLS - Starting the car engine

When you are starting the engine, red and yellow warning lights on the instrument panel will be illuminated to let you verify their operation; they should go out after the engine starts.

They should go out after the engine starts. If a warning light stays on (Engine, Oil, Battery, etc), and you cannot correct the problem, shut down the engine and get advice from a service specialist.

If the key does not turn (the ignition switch is locked), move the steering wheel gently from side to side with one hand, while turning the key with the other – this will release the lock.

The key not turning in the ignition switch is normal anti-theft behaviour of the security locking mechanism happening when someone turns the steering wheel after having pulled out the key.

Unless your car is using fully synthetic motor oil, let the engine run idle for at least 30 seconds before driving (this warm-up saves on engine repairs). When starting in a confined garage, let the engine run idle for 10 seconds, then move the car out of the garage, and let it run idle out there. (With fully synthetic motor oil, several seconds of warm-up will suffice.)

Under no circumstances turn or remove the key when the car is moving on the road, because this will stall the engine and lock the steering wheel.
