The rightmost position of the key is the starter motor
switch that allows power from the car battery to the electric starter. As
long as you are holding the key in the rightmost “START” position, the
electric starter cranks the car engine, and normally it takes less than 5
seconds for this to initiate the engine. As soon as the engine has started
working, release the key, letting it return from the “START” to “ON” position
by itself.
Sound
of a cranking starter is very different from the sound of the working engine,
and most drivers can tell this moment by ear, if in doubt – check the
tachometer, its needle is still while the starter is cranking the engine, and
goes up only when the engine itself is working.
