RIGHT TURN AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS

---

RIGHT TURN AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS

Driving elements (procedure)

On a highway, look out for a guide sign with lane arrows to see which lanes are allowed right turn, and change lanes well in advance in preparation for a turn.

Make sure there is no “No Right Turn” or “Left Turn Only” sign next to the traffic lights.

Note early if more than one lane has right turn arrow road marking.

If several lanes are marked for turning, choose the lane considering the upcoming turn.

If there is right turn arrow road marking, and you are not yet in the lane marked for right turn; or

if there is no right turn arrow road marking, and you are not yet in the rightmost lane - change to it:

Switch on the right turn signal.

Look: in the centre mirror – in the right side mirror – over the right shoulder out the side window (blind spot) for cars approaching from behind in the target lane.
When clear:

Look ahead. Change to the rightmost lane or lane with the right turn marking.
If yet far from the turn, switch off the turn signal.

Switch on the right turn signal 3 seconds or 1 light pole span before the turn.

Slow down approaching the turn.

Check for a bus or long truck in a left-hand lane, indicating right turn (long vehicles may turn right even from the leftmost lane), and if there is one:

stop in your lane at the rear end of the long vehicle, and wait until it completes the turn.

If traffic on the road where you are turning is jammed, wait at the road junction not entering the intersection until there is room for your car.

If you have to stop in a turning lane behind another car, stop closer than usually.

If there is no turn arrow, you can turn when the full green is on; when the light is yellow or red – wait at the “Stop” line.

If there is a turn arrow, you can turn either when the arrow is green (even if the full red is on), or when the arrow is off and the full green is on; when the arrow is yellow or red – wait at the “Stop” line even if the full green is on.

At the traffic lights with a right diagonal arrow and no right turn arrow, on green diagonal arrow you can turn right (even if the full red is on); when the diagonal arrow is yellow or red – wait at the “Stop” line even if the full green is on.

Turning on green turn arrow, you needn’t give way to anyone, except pedestrians who may still be crossing the road.

Turning on full green, give way to oncoming vehicles going straight or turning left, except vehicles turning left in a slip lane:

Crawl forward until the front of your car obstructs the first lane of the crossing road (not farther), and stop.
While crawling forward into the crossing road, keep your wheels straight (do not steer right).

In a 60 km/h zone you will need a gap of at least four seconds (i.e. about 70 meters or 1.5 light pole span) between your car and approaching vehicles.

When there is a gap in the oncoming traffic, or

when the traffic light changes to yellow or red, and the oncoming traffic stops –

complete the turn.

With an oncoming vehicle turning right you make simultaneous turn left side to left side.

However, if the oncoming vehicle turning right narrows your view so that you cannot clearly see if there are any oncoming vehicles going straight or turning left, stop and wait as above as if giving them way.

When either the car narrowing your view has gone, and you can see there is no oncoming traffic going straight or turning left, or
when the traffic light changes to yellow or red, and the oncoming traffic stops –

complete the turn.

While waiting, keep your wheels straight (do not steer right).

Perceive the “entering point” in the lane past the centre of the crossing road where you are turning.

Glance to the left for an emergency vehicle that may be crossing on red, or a psycho running red lights.

Looking at the “entering point”, make a square turn past the middle of the crossing road (right turn is “far and square”).

Starting the right turn in the rightmost lane, enter the crossing road immediately past its centre, into its rightmost lane as well (unless only one lane is allowed right turn AND you are turning on green arrow or into the continuing road of a T-intersection).

If only one lane is allowed right turn AND you are turning on green arrow or into the continuing road of a T-intersection, you may go into any lane (e.g. into the leftmost lane); enter the new road in a lane appropriate for the upcoming turn.

If several lanes have right turn arrow road marking, you must stay in the same lane as you go from one road to another.

Exiting the turn, give way to pedestrians.

After turning, the steering wheel will spin back to the straight position by itself (“self centre”) - do not give it a free hand, maintain light grip and straighten as needed.

Having passed the traffic light, restore the following distance.
